It’s all about connection.
You can have a brilliant idea inside your head. You can have expertise, strategy, vision, authority, knowledge.
None of it does anything out in the world until it connects with another human being.
Communication starts with connection
There’s the connection between what I mean and what you understand. That’s probably the deepest one.
There’s the connection between my expertise and your ability to access it. The expert can know everything, but if the layperson can’t get inside the idea, the expertise is trapped.
There’s the connection between a leader’s vision and the people who have to carry it out. A vision sitting inside a CEO’s head isn’t leadership yet.
There’s the connection between people who don’t share the same assumptions. Language, culture, hierarchy, expertise, ways of thinking. We can technically understand every word and still fail to understand each other.
And then there’s actual human connection. Whether I trust you. Whether I feel what you mean. Whether I believe you. Whether I want to come with you.
Our work starts with something that exists inside someone: an idea, expertise, intention, vision, meaning.
Our voice and body are what carries it outward.
And connection is what allows our best ideas to reach another person…
and make something happen in the world.

I have always been fascinated by that moment when something that exists inside one mind becomes available to another mind.
Not just speaking. Not just language. Not “communication skills.”
Experiencing the mind of another person.
When I look back, that instinct is consistent across my life.
In first grade, I was helping my classmates learn to read. Reading is access. There was something available to me through those marks on a page, and my instinct was, I want you to be able to get this too. I wasn’t satisfied that I could read. I wanted to help somebody else cross that bridge.
Then as a teenager, I became bilingual, and suddenly I experienced that phenomenon on a much larger scale.
I discovered that a second language wasn’t merely this fascinating system I could learn. It changed who and what I could reach.
There were conversations I could now have that had not been available to me before. New people, relationships, cultures, ideas, and ways of seeing the world all became accessible because I had expanded my ability to communicate… and to connect.
This is why I made the unusual decision to raise my kids in my second language - so that they would be fully bilingual and have that same expanded access to the world.
Because clear, powerful communication gives us greater access to one another.
My professional life has been an elaboration of that same obsession, across decades.
I’ve worked deeply with leaders and experts from five different continents who came to me because they had expertise, vision, knowledge, authority, insight and ideas that they needed to share more powerfully.
The expert can know something extraordinary, but if the layperson can’t access it, the knowledge is trapped.
A leader can have a brilliant vision, but if the team doesn’t understand it, believe in it, or know what it means for them, the vision can’t become action.
A founder can know exactly what she wants to build, but if she can’t enlist other people in that vision, it goes nowhere.
So my work has always been about helping smart, capable people get across more of what is already inside them.
And this circles back to the thing I’ve been fascinated by all along: connection.
How do we take what is inside us and make it available to another person?
How do we help them see what we see, understand what we understand, feel what matters to us?
That is the thread running through my life and my work.
